The slant height of the cone is the hypoteneuse of a 7 - 24 - 25 right triangle

The "formula" for a cone's surface area is   SA = pi(R² + R*L)  where R is the radius and L is the slant height

So we have

Sa = pi[7²+(7)(25)] = pi [49 + 175] = 224pi

2.5 = 25/10      "of" means "multiply...so...

1/4 x 25/10  =  25/40 = 5/8 lbs.

He didn't.  He found approximate values for pi.

He calculated upper and lower bounds for pi by first drawing hexagons that just touched the outside and inside of a circle.  He then doubled the number of sides until he had polygons with 96 sides on the outside and inside.  Then he calculated their perimeters and divided by the diameter of the circle (he probably just used a circle with diameter 1).  This showed him that pi must lie between the limits 223/71 and 22/7.

You can think of a negative number as a  cold number so here you are adding cold.    +-

If you add cold air then the room gets colder so  + - = -

and minimums are
