if the discriminant is less than zero it will not be a real number
x^2+bx+2 = -2
x^2+bx+4 = 0 discriminant is b^2 - 4(ac) = b^2 - 4(1)(4) if this is less than zero it will meet the requirements of your Q

b< +-4 so the interval is (-4,4)

\(\frac{7x}{8}+507=x, \frac{x}{8}=507\)
